A Pacific Northwest Memory

I Remember Mount St. Helens

When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, I remember volcanic ash settling in Beaverton. We even wrapped nylon stockings around our vehicle air filters to help keep ash out of the engines.

Even today, reminders of the eruption remain part of the region’s story—from ash deposits near the I-5 corridor around Toledo to pottery glazes made with volcanic ash.
